Communications Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
The DC Communications Specialist will work directly with the Communications team to lead both a proactive and reactive communication strategy. The incumbent will assist in the team’s efforts as it relates to print and digital communications and assist all departments within SCI with their communication and digital presence by delivering high-quality digital, print and social media communication services. The ideal candidate will assist with the coordination and execution of projects and strategies in coordination with all SCI Departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – All areas of responsibility listed below are essential to the satisfactory performance of this position by any/all incumbents, with reasonable accommodation, if necessary. Any non-essential functions are assumed to be included in "other related duties as assigned".

  1. Write news articles, news releases and feature articles on a professional level, clearly, concisely, on short deadlines while utilizing variable writing styles to target intended audiences.
  2. Cover news and feature events in the shooting sports industry.
  3. Research relevant topics via all available methods (Internet, data bases, etc.).
  4. Cover news and feature events and personages for use in all communications media.
  5. Travel nationally and internationally as necessary
  6. Work professionally within volunteer and staff structure.
  7. Other duties as assigned

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY
This position routinely handles highly sensitive, confidential, legal information. The environment is fast paced and constantly changing.  Incumbents are called upon to be resourceful problem solvers, resolve conflicting priorities, and maintain professional decorum. The position routinely interacts with Boards, committees, national and international agencies. Knowledge base must include bylaws, federal and international laws relating to hunting and wildlife conservation. National and international travel is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORS
Essential functions are performed in a typical office environment and require operation commonly used office machines and equipment.

COMPETENCIES

Experience in taking photographs and video at minimum of an entry-level quality.

Proficient typist.

Reliable and strong self-starter.

Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail.

Ability to recommend, proactively initiate work and projects with minimal direction.

Energetic, self-starter and resourceful problem solver.

Possess proven powerful interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment,

Must demonstrate overall excellent communication skills, attention to detail, organizational skills and exceptional customer internal and external customer care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced photo and video skills are a plus.

Knowledge of Washington, D.C., politics, government, etc. is strongly preferred.

Knowledge of hunting and hunting implements, laws, traditions and customs is extremely significant.

Experience in national and international travel and affairs is preferred.

Experience drafting content for various audiences, including internal memos, press releases.

Skillful with spreadsheet, word processing, database, and graphic presentation software programs and have the ability to become proficient with proprietary software needed for the performance of the essential functions of the position.

fulfills the requirements of the position will be considered.

 

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
This position requires knowledge normally acquired with completion of a Bachelor’s Degree and 3 to 5 years of experience.
